Overview and Purpose

Estimated Time: 2 hours

Process Step: Feedback

Learning Outcomes: Practice giving and receiving feedback within the writing community, including evaluating and acting on feedback from different sources; Learn to negotiate and integrate ideas that differ from and/or challenge the writer’s ideas

Instructional Materials: Before beginning, review the following.

Note: This assignment has two deadlines: one for posting your draft for your peers to review, and another for completing your two assigned peer reviews.

Instructions

Step 1: Submit Your Draft

First, you will submit your completed draft of your Project 1 rhetorical analysis here for peer review. (This is the same draft, including the self-assessment paragraph, that you submitted for instructor review.) You must submit your draft in both places.

Step 2: Locate Your Assigned Peers to Review

The morning after the deadline for this assignment, Canvas will automatically assign you two peers to review. You can find your assigned peers through this assignment page, in your to-do list, and/or in your Canvas notifications (depending on your settings). If you need help finding your assigned peers, refer to the Writers’ Studio Peer Review GuideLinks to an external site. resource.

Note: If you do not submit your draft for peer review by the deadline, you may not be included in the automatic peer review assignments. If this happens, please reach out to your instructor right away so they can manually assign you peers to review.

Step 3: Review Your Peers’ Drafts

Once you have located your assigned peers, read through their drafts. Be attentive as you read each draft, keeping in mind the goal of peer review is to help your peer see ways to revise their work.

Step 4: Complete Your Peer Reviews Using the Built-In Rubric

Once you have reviewed a peer’s draft, use the built-in rubric to give feedback to your peer. In each rubric category, do the following three things:

  1. Tell your peer one thing they did well in the rubric category.

  2. Tell your peer one thing they could improve on in the rubric category.

  3. Leave a piece of actionable advice. For example, if you felt your peer’s conclusion should be improved, tell them specifically what they could add/change that would make the conclusion stronger. It is not enough to just tell them something needs improvement.

Note that you must fill in the built-in rubric for each peer to complete your peer reviews. Your reviews should not be e-comments or text in the “Comments” area of this assignment. You can give feedback in both of those areas if you wish, but only what is included in the built-in rubric will be scored. If you need help finding and using the embedded rubric, refer to the Writers’ Studio Peer Review GuideLinks to an external site. resource.

Here are some other tips to keep in mind as you complete your peer reviews.

  • Do not click “Save” or “Save Comments” until you have completed your review, as this might submit your incomplete review. If this happens, reach out to your instructor. They may be able to reset your review.

  • You may want to compose your reviews in an outside document (such as a Word file or Google Doc) first, rather than typing them directly into the rubric as you go. This way, you have your reviews saved if you run into any technical issues.

  • Do not attach a separate file or leave your feedback in the “Comments” area. Use the embedded rubric only to complete your peer reviews.

  • If you see a comment stating that you need to “leave at least one comment” for your review to be finished, you can ignore that comment. The only thing you need to do is fill in the rubric.

Submission Requirements

  • Submit your Project 1 draft in this assignment for peer review.

  • Complete reviews of two of your peers’ drafts using the built-in peer review rubric.

*Note: the Canvas Student app does not support peer review. Please use a current web browser to complete peer reviews in Canvas. Chrome or Firefox is recommended by Canvas.

Example

Response 01

Hi Sara, great post! Your draft on analyzing TOMS Shoes’ rhetorical strategies is comprehensive and insightful. You effectively highlight how TOMS uses ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos to engage its audience and promote ethical consumerism. The integration of transparent impact reports, emotional storytelling, straightforward business model explanations, and timely campaigns is well-articulated. The visuals complement your analysis, enhancing the overall impact.

However, the analysis could benefit from more specific examples and direct quotes from TOMS’ marketing materials to further substantiate your points. Additionally, consider refining the thesis statement to make it more succinct and impactful. Overall, your draft provides a thorough exploration of TOMS’ communication strategies.
