Instructions of PSY 322 Module 8-2 Journal

Assignment

In this course, you are asked to complete three journal assignments in which you reflect on “raising” a teen from birth through age 18 years. Earlier in the course, you reflected on your readings and personal experiences to consider the unique challenges of raising a child from birth to 10 years. You also considered the unique challenges of raising a child from 10 to 14 years. In this module, you will reflect on your readings and personal experiences to consider the unique challenges of raising a child from 14 to 18 years.

As your teen shifts from grade school to high school from around 14 to 18 years of age, it is a time, in part, to help your child prepare for their shift from teens to adulthood. Your teen will likely experience many milestones during this time, including getting a job, earning a driver’s license, sending out applications to colleges, and even possibly finding their first “love” (Morin, 2020). Online activity will be a critical concern, as you monitor their activity and help them understand social responsibility, while trying to balance that with allowing them their independence.

While there will likely be many times when your teen insists that they know better than you, there’s a good chance that their skills could use some fine-tuning and that you have plenty to teach them. This is an age when serious issues may need to be addressed, such as encounters with drug use and abuse, mental health—including anxiety, depression, and suicide—cyberbullying, and loneliness (Morin, 2020). As a parent, it can be quite rewarding to prepare your child for adulthood, but it certainly does not come without many challenges along the way.

Parents raising their teens are often given advice, such as take time to support your child’s milestones (e.g., help them practice driving), consider giving them chores to help them learn responsibility, monitor their activity (particularly online), and support your child’s efforts to be their own individual (Morin, 2020). For this journal entry, consider—from your readings and from your own experiences—the challenges of raising a child from ages 14 to 18 years. Specifically, answer the following questions:

  1. Put yourself in in the role of the parent. What strategies do you feel would be successful to raise your teenager?

  2. How does your parenting perspective relate to your own experiences and the course material?

  3. What specific relevant connections can you make?

Submit your assignment here. Make sure you’ve included all the required elements by reviewing the guidelines and rubric.

Step-By-Step Guide On Module 8-2 Journal: Raising a Teen

Introduction to PSY 322 Module 8-2 Journal

This PSY 322 MODULE 8-2 Journal: Raising a Teen assignment involves reflecting on the unique challenges of raising a child from 14 to 18 years old. You will consider your readings and personal experiences to develop successful parenting strategies, relate these strategies to your own experiences and the course material, and make relevant connections to the course content.

Put yourself in the role of the parent. What strategies do you feel would be successful in raising your teenager?

Developing Successful Parenting Strategies

To start the PSY 322 MODULE 8-2 Journal: Raising a Teen, we will discuss successful parenting strategies.

  • Articulate Strategies: Clearly outline specific strategies you believe would be effective in raising a teenager.
  • Provide Justification: Explain why you believe these strategies would be successful, using evidence from your readings and experiences.

Example

Raising a teenager from 14 to 18 years old comes with unique challenges and opportunities. As a parent, developing successful strategies is crucial to support your teen’s transition to adulthood. One effective strategy is open communication. Encouraging honest and open dialogue allows teens to express their thoughts and feelings, fostering trust and understanding. According to our readings, adolescents who feel heard are more likely to make responsible decisions and seek parental guidance when needed (Oates, 2020).

Another critical strategy is setting clear boundaries while allowing independence. Establishing rules helps teens understand expectations, but providing autonomy within those boundaries encourages them to develop decision-making skills. The course material supports this balance by emphasizing the importance of guidance combined with the freedom to make choices (Oates, 2020).

How does your parenting perspective relate to your own experiences and the course material?

Relating Parenting Perspective to Personal Experiences and Course Material

In this section of PSY 322 MODULE 8-2 Journal: Raising a Teen, we will discuss the information we studied related to the Journal Topic.

  • Compare Perspectives: Compare your parenting perspective with the course material and your personal experiences.
  • Highlight Similarities and Differences: Note any similarities and differences between your strategies and those suggested in the course.

Example

Relating these strategies to my personal experiences, I recall how my parents balanced support and independence during my teen years. They encouraged me to take on responsibilities, such as a part-time job, which helped me develop a sense of accountability. This aligns with the course material’s emphasis on responsibility through tasks like part-time work or chores.

When I compare my perspective with the course content, a notable similarity is the emphasis on communication and trust. However, a difference lies in the approach to discipline. While the course suggests a more collaborative approach to setting rules, my personal experience involved a more authoritative style. Despite this, both methods highlight the need for consistency and fairness.

What specific relevant connections can you make?

Making Relevant Connections

In this section of PSY 322 MODULE 8-2 Journal: Raising a Teen, we will explore the relationship between our strategies and the course content.

  • Connect to Course Material: Make specific connections between your strategies and the course content.
  • Use Examples: Provide examples from the course readings or your personal experiences to support your connections.

Example

In making relevant connections, I find the strategy of open communication directly ties to our readings on adolescent mental health. For instance, discussing issues like anxiety and depression openly can help teens feel supported and reduce stigma. Additionally, the strategy of balancing independence with boundaries relates to our discussions on peer influence, as teens who understand limits are better equipped to handle peer pressure.

Overall, these strategies and their alignment with course material underscore the complexity of parenting during adolescence. By combining evidence-based approaches with personal experiences, we can better navigate the challenges and support our teens’ development into responsible adults.
