Chapter 2 Assignment: Saving Metaverse and Sinking Meta

In Chapter 2 we discussed the role human resources plays in strategic planning. The human resources manager works with the organization to define the organizational strategy and allocate resources toward the achievement of organizational goals. The text describes human resource planning as, “Analyzes and identifies the need for, and availability of, people so that the organization can meet its strategic objectives. The process ensures the right number of people with the right capabilities at the right times and in the right places”.

In this case study we explore where this planning process broke down at Meta (formerly Facebook). The company’s troubled Metaverse division was in trouble and Meta’s handling of it resulted in mass layoffs in 2023 rather than a slow and steady decline of the troubled division’s employees.
