Overview
It’s important to develop a self-awareness of your personal strengths and areas of opportunity for improvement when pursuing personal growth and development. In the Module One discussion, you began to think about what it means to communicate effectively and started to consider your educational and professional goals. In this journal assignment, you will dive a little deeper into your own personal communication strengths, areas of opportunity, and communication-specific goals. Your responses will only be seen by your instructor. In Module Eight, you will have an opportunity to reflect on how you have grown throughout the course, and you will chart more specific career goals.
Prompt
Use what you’ve learned in this module and what you’ve experienced in your own life to reflect on your own communication strengths, areas of opportunity, and career paths of interest.
Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
- Identify three to five of your communication strengths, and explain how you know this to be true using supporting examples from your own experience.
- Identify two to three areas of opportunity in communication skills that you need to work on, and describe how you will know when you have grown in these areas.
- Describe possible career paths that you may be interested in, the skills you believe you already possess, and the areas you need to work on to be successful in this career.

You are ready to experience self-discovery and skill enhancement in communication via the “Owlisdom How-To COM 127 Guide.” Throughout this module, you will look at your communication skills by evaluating and analyzing your communication strengths and weaknesses. This introspective process is crucial for mapping out your professional goals and is integral to your development in the course “COM-127 1-3 Journal: Journal-Professional Goals Part 1”. Follow the given structured guidelines and use the opportunity to explore possible career areas to which your communicative competencies will correspond. Make this learning experience your own and sharpen your skills, build your experience, and prepare yourself for a strong foundation in your future work.

Identifying Communication Strengths
Our first step, beginning with the COM-127 1-3 Journal: The first guideline of the Professional Goals Part I will be to write about our communication skills that we consider our strengths.
- Start by defining what communication strengths are.
- These are the skills that enable you to pass on information, receive information, and decipher it appropriately.
- Try to remember situations you have faced in the past at work and also in other areas of your life.
- This may include endorsements from fellow employees, managers, or supervisors who have noted your good communication skills.
- Illustrate how you used them and in what situations you applied these skills, mentioning the result each time.
Example
Good listening further strengthens conversation. so, we have two ears and one mouth but proficient speakers do it twice as much. Little methods can help me become a great listener in my personal and working life. One of the things I try to do is to let the speaker have their say before I say something. However, it might be surprising; it may sound straightforward, yet many people cannot verbally express it. A suitable listening method comprises paraphrasing what the other individual says or asks before responding.
Identify two to three areas of opportunity in communication skills that you need to work on, and describe how you will know when you have grown in these areas.
Recognizing Areas of Opportunity
- You will have to work on these things to improve communication.
- It is important to identify such areas for one’s own development as well as for the development of one’s specific field of interest.
- When analyzing the areas of personal growth, be candid and eat one’s candles.
- Identify specific targets for what needs to be done and how to know that improvement is taking place.
- Consider establishing the SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) to help in the growth process.
Example
The two areas that I think I should promote are conciseness and clarity, which fall under oral and written in “The Seven Cs of Communication” (Bisen & Priya, 2009, p. 18). Other characteristics of communication for clarity include avoiding complex and extensive sentences and being precise with the facts provided. When communicating for clarity, you should also not repeat your message, and keep it short (Bisen & Priya, 2009, pp. 18–20).
Describe possible career paths that you may be interested in, the skills you believe you already possess, and the areas you need to work on to be successful in this career.
Exploring Career Path
- Identify which communication skill is required in the careers you are interested in.
- Determine which of the above-mentioned requirements correspond to your current strength.Formulate a strategy for the enhancement of the skills that you want to enhance regarding your career path.
Example
My preferred career path would be to work as a UX writer for IT businesses. “Who is a UX Writer?” asks. In five words, Patrick Stafford responds to the question, “Why are UX Writers so important?” (2018): “The future is in writing.” Although it is unquestionably vital, coding is a well-established career in technology. He says that because your writing and voice will set a business apart from rivals, the need for writers in the digital industry is growing (Stafford, 2018). Writing for UX means writing with the user in mind.
