Instructions of COM-127 3-1 Discussion

3-1 Discussion: An Organization’s Mission, Vision, and Values

As discussed in Section 4.2 of Management Principles, a mission and vision both relate to an organization’s purpose and aspirations and are typically communicated in some form of brief written statements. To summarize, the mission and vision statements serve three critical roles:

  • To communicate the purpose and values of the organization to its stakeholders
  • To guide the development of strategies for how the organization will achieve its mission and vision
  • To guide the development of measurable goals and objectives to gauge the success of the organization’s strategy

In this discussion, you will select a company of your choosing and analyze its mission, vision, and values statements to gain insight into the organization’s overarching purpose and goals with its stakeholders.

First, select one company from the list below and examine its mission, vision, or value statements as published directly on the company’s website.

In your initial post, address the following:

  • Briefly summarize the company’s mission, vision, or values statements. In your own words, what do you think is the overarching purpose behind these statements?
  • What are some specific ways a company could communicate its mission, vision, or values to both internal and external stakeholders? Explain and give examples.
  • How do you think the role of the mission and vision statements influence and gain employee buy-in?

Tip: Copy and paste each bulleted question and type your responses underneath.

In your replies to at least two peers, use these questions to guide your responses:

  • Analyze your classmates’ strategies for conveying the company’s mission, vision, or values to key stakeholders. Which strategies do you think are most effective, and which ones would you change or revise?
  • What similarities or differences (if any) do you see between the mission, vision, or value statements of the company you analyzed and the companies your peers analyzed?

Follow the Owlisdom guidelines below to solve the COM-127 3-1 Discussion: An Organization’s Mission, Vision, and Values like a pro.

In this discussion, you will select a company and analyze its mission, vision, and values statements to gain insight into the organization’s overarching purpose and goals with its stakeholders.

 Selecting a Company

  • Choose one company from the provided list (e.g., Starbucks, Toyota, Pepsi, Prudential Insurance, Microsoft) based on your interest or prior knowledge.
  • Access the company’s official website to find authentic mission, vision, and values statements.

Example

Starbucks’ mission statement, as found on its website, is “To inspire and nurture the human spirit—one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time” (Starbucks, 2024).

Briefly summarize the company’s mission, vision, or values statements. In your own words, what do you think is the overarching purpose behind these statements?

Analyzing the Mission, Vision, or Values Statements

  • Concisely summarize the content of the statements found on the website.
  • Capture the essence without altering the meaning.
  • Express in your own words what you perceive as the core purpose behind these statements.
  • How do they reflect the company’s strategic goals and values?

Example

Analyzing this statement, the overarching purpose is twofold. Firstly, it aims to establish Starbucks as more than just a coffee shop; it aspires to be a place where people meet, connect, and create memories.

What are some specific ways a company could communicate its mission, vision, or values to internal and external stakeholders? Explain and give examples.

Communication Strategies

  • Suggest methods the company can use to communicate these statements internally to employees (e.g., training, internal newsletters).
  • Discuss how these statements could be effectively communicated to external stakeholders such as customers and investors (e.g., marketing materials, corporate social responsibility reports)

Example

Internally, Starbucks can communicate this mission through comprehensive training programs that empower employees to deliver exceptional service, emphasizing the company’s values of community building and individual respect.

How do you think the role of the mission and vision statements influence and gain employee buy-in?

Influence on Employee Buy-in

  • Evaluate how mission and vision statements can foster employee alignment with the company’s goals.
  • Consider aspects like employee motivation and engagement.

Example

The mission statement significantly influences employee buy-in by aligning the company’s operational goals with broader social values.

Analyze your classmates’ strategies for conveying the company’s mission, vision, or values to key stakeholders. Which methods do you think are most effective, and which ones would you change or revise? What similarities or differences (if any) do you see between the mission, vision, or value statements of the company you analyzed and the companies your peers analyzed?

 Peer Response Strategy

In your replies to at least two peers, use these questions to guide your responses:

  • Critique your peers’ approaches to conveying the company’s strategic statements.
  • Recommend improvements or alternative strategies.
  • Identify any commonalities or differences between the strategic statements of the chosen company and those analyzed by peers.
  • Discuss their potential implications.

Response 01

I found your analysis of Starbucks’ mission statement very insightful. The emphasis on nurturing the human spirit aligns seamlessly with their community-focused branding. Your point about internal communication through employee training is particularly significant.
